How do I get rid of kerosene and pesticides that I no longer need?

Many household items contain hazardous chemicals that can’t just be thrown away or poured down the drain. So how are you supposed to dispose of oils, flammable liquids, and other hazardous household substances?

Motor oils and cooking oils are accepted at recycling centers around the city. The Hazardous Waste Facility, located inside the Wood Recycling Center at 4063 North Hawthorne Street, accepts most other items, including:

• Adhesives

• Drain Cleaners

• Fire Extinguishers

• Computer Electronics

• Gasoline

• Pesticides

• Motor Oils and Fluids

• Grease and Rust Solvents

• Oil-Based Paint

• Over Cleaners

• Paint Thinner/Remover

• Kerosene

• Dry/Wet Cell Batteries

• Propane Tanks

There is a small list of items that are not accepted at the Hazardous Waste Facility, which includes latex paint and ammunition. You can dry out leftover latex paint using sawdust, kitty litter, or shredded paper before placing it in your regular trash bin for disposal. As for ammunition, you can take your shell casings to your local police department for safe disposal.

The Hazardous Waste Facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m to 3 p.m, except for holidays. You must be a City or Hamilton County resident and present a state-issued driver’s license to be able to drop off your household waste.
