Avondale Baptist redevelopment, 2 Habitat homes

Council again deferred a request to redevelop former Avondale Baptist Church and approved two new Habitat homes at their Feb. 3 meeting.

Avondale Baptist redevelopment

A developer looks to rezone 2003 Wilcox Boulevard to turn the former Avondale Baptist Church into a multi-family complex. Council deferred the request last November, citing a lack of communication about the project, and again on Dec. 2.

At the Nov. 18 meeting, a resident asked the developer to work with community members to retain part of the old church structure.

Councilwoman Marvene Noel, District 8, moved to defer Council’s decision once more to Feb. 17 to allow for a neighborhood association meeting discussion of the redevelopment.

Noel reiterated that she would require the Detroit-based developer to appear before Council before approving the rezoning.

2 Habitat homes

Council will vote on providing Habitat for humanity $80,000 to build homes at 2113 and 2117 Davenport St.

The city donated the tax delinquent properties to Habitat last April.
