Council members will vote on two proposed tax rates at their Aug. 26 meeting — one from Mayor Tim Kelly and one put forward by Council members Chip Henderson, District 1, and Jeff Davis, District 3. A proposal must receive a majority of “yes” votes at consecutive meetings to take effect.

Their second and final vote will be on Sept. 9, and tax bills start going out in October.

Both rates would provide $23 million in raises for police officers and firefighters. But Mayor Kelly’s proposed $1.93 tax rate would generate millions more for a host of other items, from a new fire truck to road paving to parks maintenance.
