Every school-aged child in Hamilton County has a seat at their zoned school, but for those looking for another option or specialized curriculum, there are a number of schools that accept students from any school zone.

Students can apply to a limited number of open spots at certain schools through the school choice program. If the number of student applications is greater than the amount of open spots, the district randomly selects applicants to receive a school offer through its choice lottery program.

Here’s how you can find more information about the performance and characteristics of Hamilton County schools accepting school choice enrollees:

  • This tool from the Tennessee Department of Education grades schools on a range of metrics, including graduation rates, the percentage of students meeting grade-level expectations, and the progress of English learners in becoming English proficient. Simply search a school to see its performance indicators (which can be broken down further by subject and compared to the school district and state). The tool also provides statistics like student-to-teacher ratios and the number of student services support staff.

  • Use the following links to learn more about local Magnet schools, Open Enrollment schools, Future Ready Institutes, and Early College/Career schools, which are among Hamilton County’s school choice options. Families can also apply for Hamilton County Virtual School through the lottery.

  • In the spring, many schools in the lottery program hold open houses for families to learn more about their programs and environment.

Hamilton County’s second round of school choice applications will be open until August 1. Families can apply to up to five available schools.
